“Now, our God, we give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from your hand.”
—1 Chronicles 29:13-14
Greetings from the Calvary Session!
As the leaves turn colors and the nights grow cooler, and the year draws to a close, we as the Session of Calvary begin to think about the care and stewardship that all of us provide to our Calvary community and church each year.
As you read above, the Chronicler asks, and we here echo: Who are we, and who are our people, that we should give as generously as this? Our answer: we are those who have been called by God into the halls of the Big Red Church. We are God’s hands, and God’s stewards. Stewardship, in the words of the PCUSA, “is answering God’s call to fulfill our larger purpose. …It’s an opportunity to be a force for good in the community and around the world.”
Maintaining our beloved and historic church building is a responsibility that we undertake joyfully but also thoughtfully and deliberately. As you all know, we as a community took on a large debt this year in order to replace our elevator and return our church building to full functionality and accessibility. And as our beautiful building continues to age, other building improvement projects will be on the horizon as well.
We also plan to continue to be active in our neighborhood—continuing our Community in Action “Red” Cards, and our work supporting Project STAY. We also hope to reopen our labyrinth ministry, and continue to spread the word of our unique model of being a first century church in modern Milwaukee, where we are all ministers and we minister to one another.
All of these plans takes financial resources. We recognize that we all contribute much of our time, energy, and talents to our expanding, international community of faith, and for that we are so grateful. Yet today, we, the Session of Calvary, ask you to consider how God may be calling you to contribute to Calvary monetarily in the coming year as well. We ask that you consider this well, and respond by Sunday, December 1 with an estimate of your ability to give, allowing the Session to create a thoughtful and accurate budget for the coming year.
Please use this link to return your stewardship pledge.
Whether we can give a large amount or a small amount, the meaning is the same in the eyes of God. All we can do is return the blessings that we have received to support God’s community in Calvary.
Thank you, and may the Peace of Christ be with you and yours!
